Penfolds is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious wineries and has an international reputation for producing wines of the highest quality. The historic Magill Estate Vineyard, originally known as the Grange Vineyard, was established in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson and Mary Penfold. This vineyard was first planted with grenache from cuttings taken from the South of France and has been the source of inspiration and fruit supply for Penfolds Grange in the later years, widely regarded as Australia’s greatest wine.
Today the winery produces Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Traminer, Pinot Gris, Tempranillo, Viognier, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Riesling, Merlot, Semillon, and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. The introduction of Penfolds Grange in 1951 marked the milestone for Australian fine wine. Penfolds Grange is the original and most powerful expression of both multi-vineyard and multi-district blending philosophy, which results in a consistency of style and quality across vintages.
The 2008 Vintage of Grange became the first ‘New World’ wine to receive 100 point ratings from both reviewers, Wine Spectator and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
“An utterly majestic Shiraz, sleek and seamless, brimming with ripeness on a framework that allows for grace and expressiveness in equal measure. The intensity of fresh blueberry and plum fruit holds attention until the nuances kick in, offering glints of exotic spice, coffee, cocoa, bay leaf and mint. Shows tremendous presence without a lot of weight, the tannins present but not even close to getting in the way. A great wine now with plenty of room to grow. Drink now through 2040.” says, Harvey Steiman, Editor-at-Large of Wine Spectator.
A wine that has two perfect scores, and descriptions like “utterly majestic” and “tremendous presence” is definitely an iconic luxury to own.
For wine drinkers with shallower pockets, the Penfolds Bin series offers great value at a fraction of the price.
